The adage that you are as old as you feel will be demonstrated in full from tomorrow as the 2006 B.C. Seniors Games gets underway in Abbotsford.
And with the four-day event a little more than 24 hours away, president Bob Dyck indicated yesterday that he is ready for a top-class spectacle that will showcase the talents of the best older athletes in the province.
“It’s as ready as it is going to be,” said Dyck.
“There are always a few last minute preparations but we are ready to go.”
A small number of sporting events will begin before tomorrow evening’s opening ceremony, which starts at 5 p.m. at Rotary Stadium.
However, it will be after the ceremony – which will include a performance by Abbotsford singer Shane Wiebe and a display by the local Aerial Dance and Acro Academy – that the games will start in earnest.
Approximately 3,400 athletes will compete in 25 sports in venues throughout B.C.’s fifth-largest city, with events ranging from bocce to bridge and slo-pitch to snooker.
There will also be a games village at Exhibition Park’s Ag Rec building that will offer a range of entertainment to the public and be open for the first three days of competition
That attraction, opening at 9 a.m. tomorrow, will include trade shows, a community showcase, food vendors, door prizes, and an internet cafe.
The closing ceremony is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, starting at 3:30 p.m.
