Compiled from outside sources; Jessie Shen, DigiTimes.com [Tuesday 12 September 2006]Intel and Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) have formed a strategic alliance to jointly enter the Internet-cafe PC market in China with the introduction of Intel's Platform Administration Technology (PAT) software solution, according to a press release from Intel's office in China on September 12.

In a separate press release, Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) revealed that its ECS 865G motherboard, which enables the Intel's PAT software solution, will initially target the Internet cafe PC market in China. The ECS 865G motherboard features the Intel Pentium 4/Pentium D processor, 800MHz FSB and DDR400, according to ECS' website.

Intel PAT is a software solution that provides manageability by helping to maintain clean and stable systems in a network environment targeting medium and small size enterprises, such as i-Cafes, according to Intel's website. Intel PAT-enabled desktop motherboards include three models from Intel—the D945PLNM, D915PDT and D865PCK—and one under a cooperation with ODM—the ECS 865G.

Statistics show that 112,264 Internet cafes are registered in China, with a market of approximately 6.1 million desktop PCs, according to ECS. Under newly struck deal, ECS will provide the hardware while Intel will provide its software platform, according to ECS.

Intel is seeking partnerships with motherboard ODMs for the development of PCs targeting Internet-cafes, in an attempt to lower production costs, a September 12 report in the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) cited market sources as indicating. Asustek Computer and Gigabyte Technology, which are currently two largest motherboard brands in the China channel market, have not yet participated in Intel's push with the PAT platform, according to the paper.
