Washington - About one-third of U.S. Internet users have logged on using a wireless connection, be it on a home network, in the workplace, at an Internet cafe or via their cell phones, according to a report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

"We know that 'always on' broadband connections really deepen people's relationship to the Internet; adding 'on the go' to the mix takes this a step further," John Horrigan, associate research director at the Pew Internet Project, told Reuters.

"The convenience of wireless access gives people the chance to fire off a quick e-mail to someone while waiting in a doctor's office or check the news headlines on the way to work."

The survey also found that 20% of Internet users now have wireless home networks, which is double the number who said so in January 2005.

Twenty-seven percent have logged on wirelessly from somewhere other than home or work, and 13% said their PDAs allow wireless access.

Among laptop users, 88% said they have logged on via a wireless home network, while 36% used a wireless network at work and 57% have accessed a wireless connection someplace other than home or work.
