Youth's hand severed in Johor cafe parang attack

ONE minute, the four youths were having a blast playing computer games at a Johor internet cafe.

The next, a gang of 10 masked men carrying parangs suddenly dashed in without warning and started hacking at them and a cafe employee.

The bloody rampage left one youth (above) with a severed hand (above), another with a broken arm, reported Sin Chew Daily.

The youths, aged 18 to 22, were sent to hospital, where doctors managed to re-attach the first victim's arm.

All the victims suffered slash wounds, including one victim, 18, who was slashed in the back when he tried to run away.

The extent of the cafe employee's injuries are not known.

The youths insisted they were not involved in any gangs.

They said they had no idea why they were attacked.

The incident happened at about 1am on Monday at an Internet cafe in Kulai, Johor.

Besides the five victims, two other customers were in the cafe at the time.

When the assailants rushed in, one of them uttered, 'Where are they?' before they started hacking the victims.

The assailants fled the scene without taking any money or valuables.

The mother of the victim with the severed arm told Sin Chew Daily that she and her husband rushed to the scene after receiving a call from another victim's brother at 1.15am.

Seeing the extent of his injuries, they decided to rush their son to the hospital themselves.

When the father scooped his son up, a police officer handed him the severed hand, which they had packed in a plastic bag full of ice.

At 3am, the youth went through a 10-hour operation to re-attach his hand.

A hospital spokesman said that while his hand would recover, it may never be as mobile as it was before.
